Hot stone massage
Hot stone massage is a great, warming treatment any time of the year. It is a natural therapy where heated, flat stones are placed on key points on the body. The massage therapist may also hold the stones and use them to massage certain points of the body. The use of hot stones as a healing therapy dates back to ancient times. The hot stones that are used for massage are usually made of basalt because it is rich in iron. We use basalt lava stone that is produced from volcanic eruptions because it retains heat for up to 45 minutes.
The heated rocks are placed on strategic points of the body, usually the palms of the hands, between the toes or on the spine, depending on the condition that is being treated. The heat of the stones warm and relax the muscles, allowing the therapist to apply more pressure to that area if needed.
The warmth of the stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system. Your massage therapist may place stones on points that are considered energy centers of the body. This is thought to help rebalance the body and mind.
Benefits of hot stone massage include an increase in blood flow through the body, in cell metabolism, lymphatic function, deep relaxation and a feeling of balance and harmony.
Hot stone massage may be right for you if you experience circulation problems, tend to feel chilly or get cold feet. Itβs also suited for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat helps the muscles relax, making it easier for the therapist to massage the body without deep pressure. It is encouraged if you have back pain, arthritis, osteoarthritis, stress, anxiety, tension, insomnia or depression.
Hot stone massage has benefits for the mind, body and spirit. However, you should always check with your doctor before scheduling a hot stone massage as individuals with certain conditions (such as pregnant women and people with high blood pressure) are advised to avoid this type of therapy.
